RED FLAG CANBERRA
Mental Health Action
Red Flag Canberra asserts the right of ACT residents to better mental health care. We believe that a single action can make a difference in the community, and that collective action can greatly impact the world. Through advocacy and outreach activities, our team works tirelessly each day to contribute their part to the greater good.
RED FLAG CANBERRA AT A GLANCE
A Bit of Background
Red Flag Canberra is the voice of mental health consumers and carers asserting their
human right to access empathic, high quality mental healthcare.
Our vision is that people are empowered when seeking mental health care rather than being
ignored or marginalised. To seek help is an act of strength – we envision that a request for
help will be met with a profound response.
Red Flag Canberra is about empowering people to seek help within a healthcare system that
views the preservance of dignity as a priority.

Making A Difference
OUR MISSION TO CREATE “SAFE HARBOUR”
Red Flag Canberra is working to develop peer-run crisis support for people experiencing
mental distress. The aim is to provide an immediate response. . We want to develop a non-medical, non-diagnostic approach to people in crisis
outside of a clinical environment.
We aim to provide compassionate, person centred support. Our peer-led ethos means that
everyone who works and volunteers at Safe Harbour has had their own experiences of
mental health issues.

LOBBYING
Approaching ACT government with the concerns of ACT mental health consumers and carers and championing the cause of peer support on all levels of mental health services
PEER WORKFORCE IN THE ACT
Red Flag Canberra is committed to the development of a strong identified peer workforce in the ACT. At this stage the ACT is lagging behind the states in terms of developing a strong identified peer work force. Self-identification of workers with lived experience helps to breakdown stigma. We also need a greater presence of peer workers in community settings, not just in a very narrow role in hospital settings.
